Although he has brown hair, his life brings him much travel, and he gains little opportunity to bathe, leaving his hair somewhat greasy and darker. His eyes are brown. He has not had a wealthy life, and therefor carries all of his possessions in a sack and backpack. A wields a sword and dresses like a commoner, except for the furs which keep him warm in the winter. --- Frederick DuBoise of Verditius The One Who is not Seen It was autumn day in a small village near the Durance River when the thing happened. Frederick BuDoise, was having just about his typical day; the jeering and taunting from the other children, parents shunning the boy away when he strayed too close to their homes, and even the dogs who were polite to everyone else, would become vicious when the lad was within the range of their scent. Still, he held no ill-will against any of them, quite an unusual characteristic for one who was a cast out. The day went on, the day of his fifth birthday, just like any other day. He pursued the other children, anxious and wanting to join in play, to join in their adventures wherever taken. And so he followed well enough behind where the occasional air born rock would fall short. But this time he stopped, quite abruptly, with a look of curiosity. For the group of children were heading towards a stranger; a boy of the same age as Frederick. But this one was dressed in clothes that were all black. He never seen anyone so dressed, for simple garb is rather plain for folks of these parts, certainly not this charcoal black color. The strange boy, with black greasy hair and dark eyes, had a gaze that pierced through the marauding children, only to be met by Fredericks returning stare. The flock of children soon veered to another direction, like a rabbit desperately evading a predator. They never saw the strange boy, who was clearly dead ahead of them. No, this was merely their customary cycle of evading that strange DuBoise boy. They were gone soon enough, leaving only the two starring at each other. Frederick lost focus, distracted by the group of children now off to the side and farther away. But he soon looked back, only to see the other was gone. Later that night, his youngest sister who had been sick with fever, died. Riders in Black The devastated family suffered from the lost child, and the passing of their grief was painfully slow over the next year. But normalcy did return, a lot quicker for Frederick, for he was required to perform more chores than the rest. Only his mother showed the slightest love for him, the kind only a mother can; pity that Frederick would loose her to. His sixth birthday came, without any celebration. To Frederick, it was just another day, just another time to evade his choirs. Once again, he could not catch the other children, but was left alone near the river. He then met someone who he had forgotten about, someone who he would soon learn to be a bad omen and bringer of death. The boy in black was back, this time with an eerie smile on his face. Frederick looked east, then west, to find a crossing; he wanted to get closer to this one. But then came screams from the south, grabbing Frederick’s attention. Smoke was rising from the village. Looking back to the river, the boy was gone once again. More and more screams terrified him, as he frantically ran back to town. Bad men wearing black, tattered cloaks were destroyed the town, killing everyone and everything. Families scattered in all directions, most were widowed in some way. Fate allowed Frederick to join with his fleeing father and siblings; the mother was dead, run through by the riders. Most who fled that day were chased down and destroyed. Only the DuBoise family escaped, but certainly not due to luck. Lucky Seven Marseilles, the city which the DuBoise family called home for a short time, was an active sea community. Jacques BuBoise worked several jobs that year: boat builder, blacksmith, and so on, desperately trying to support his children. His decisions were poor at best, and for whatever reason, decided to book passage to Italy on a cargo ship. Frederick did not understand this, not at 6 years of age. All he understood was the next day was his dreaded birthday. The day he was learning brought only sorrow. And it was time to board that ship. The mystery boy showed up once again, his age seemed to parallel Fredericks. And the two exchanged eerie looks, one with gift, the other with pure evil. The ship was soon underway, well out to sea, when the crew became petrified. An albatross, the worst of a seafaring omens, landed mid-ship. The men frantically chased the bird, fore and aft, attempting to drive it away. Then the fog set in. “Fog! In the Mediterranean Sea! An albatross!” first mate pointing to Frederick, “Its all his fault! That strange boy did this! Our voyage is cursed because of him!” The captain argued with Jacques the boy must leave. And fearing the loss of his other children, the DuBoise father finally agreed. And so Frederick found himself learning to swim for the first time. He swam and swam, but did not make it very far before his muscles began to tire. “But what was that?” he thought, “The sounds of waves crashing against rock? Swim! Swim! Swim! Don’t stop now. Almost there.” A New Home Little did the boy know, the ship had nearly made it it the Italian cost. He was found on the beach, exhausted, by a travelling magi and her guard, Katerina filia Vulcanus of Verditius. It was clear to her the boy possed the gift, and welcomed the chance to take an apprentice that came to her like a gift, without any need for abduction. The first five years were uneventful. Even Fredericks birthdays went unchecked by the demon that plagued him. Perhaps the Aegis prevented this little incursion. Frederick was able to ground his arts and learn hermetic abilities. Frederick would come to spend as much time learning the hermetic arts and arcane knowledges as he spent on gaining crafts. Many of the mundane skills were learned from his mistress, but some where learned from other covenfolk, when Katerina was too busy. Alot of his assitance in the lab was directed towards building better magic items, especially swords, as Frederick and Katerina would find the covenant in desperate need of in the coming years. A lab accident would add to Frederick's minsteress' grief, but would benefit Frederick in a very special way. For Katerina would come to show a desire to improve on her longevity potion, above and beyond what was already proven by past formulae. The arcane experimentation began, and the radical idea of mixing the blood of certain magical beasts with the Corpus vis resulted in an explosion, not of fire, but of another kind of magical energy. For the mistress, the season was a waste. But Frederick walked away that day with a special gift. One that yielded 1 pawn of corpus vis within a few strands of hair that would fall out every season. Katerina was confident she would improve the potion, so she continued under certain presumptions, and attempted to mix the magical beasts blood with the vis. The arcane attempt resulted poorly yet again, leaving a wild and crazed beast, huffing on the table, peering down upon the two. The beast was subdued by covenant guards, but not before poor Frederick was wounded. The scar left was not just physical, for Frederick would never be able to take on a familiar, his blood poisoned with the scent of beast by the radical creation. Frederick did not see much travel within the Tribunal. He was kept at home for the most part, unsure why his mistress would not let him share the dangers with her. On various occassions, Frederick was able to meet certain travellars that would happen on the covenant. In particular, a magus named Osprey, who hailed from Lakehome, would visit the covenant on occasion, trading for vis with Katerina. This was about the extend of Frederick's involvement with the Order. Back in Force The last 10 years of his apprenticeship was difficult. For not only would Frederick need to complete his gauntlet, but he would also be re-visted by the demons, who were growing stonger. Each year, the covenant underwent looses, for each year the counter part would appear to Frederick, always 1 year older in appearance. And each time, the Riders in Black would follow to kill. Sometimes farmers were killed, sometimes council members were slain during travel. The covenant quickly progressed into Winter, each year loosing a little more, until only a few were left. On his twenty first year of age, Frederick had witnessed the deaths of many friends and Sodales. Katerina had slain 3 of the demon riders. Frederick himself had slain one; in a bit of magical rage, Frederick summoned the powers of perdo with vim, hoping to spontaneously kill the demon. But his magics worked clumbsily, and the two, that is the beast and the man, decended into the realm of twilight. A fierce battle was fought, deep within the phathoms of magic itself. Frederick attempted to work the magics further, while in this unexplained state, but the energies would prove to only fuse with his body. By forces unexplained, perhaps the mere nature of the strange world, the demon had equal troubles. Its soul was somehow removed, perhaps decending back to hell. Frederick awoke, bringin a part of that world back with him. At the end of every season, at midnite when one passes to the next, Frederick, now fused with the essence of the strange world, would dream of this place. One man's dream is another nightmare, or so some may say. But Frederick would awaken, caughing forth a small globe, a part of that world, which can be used effectively with the Hermetics (vim vis). Recently, Katerina required more Aquam vis for a project of hers, but she is occupied in some complicated political manouvring in the Roman Tribunal. Therefore, she chooses to send Frederick, with a pair of trusted guards, to Lakehome to negotiate with Osprey. In her eyes, Frederick is magus, but he needs to complete the item before confirmation can take place. <> <> Actually, since Frederick only of Lakehome (ie OOH Lore 1), perhaps thats also, in addition to the bad rep, his only concrete option. knows =============================== 1205 Year 21 Summer: Learn Certamen from Terrus, 0->1/1, Vis-> 1Co/1Vi Fall: Learn Certamen from Terrus, 1/1->2/1, Vis-> 2Co/2Vi 1206, Year 22: Winter: Help Terrus in lab, MT->5/1, Vis-> 3Co/3Vi Spring: Single weapon->1/1 from adventure Copy Intelligo Summa, Scribe Latin->2/1 Vis->4Co/4Vi Summer: Learn Certamen from Terrus, Certamen->3/0, Vis->5Co/5Vi WT=4, Area Lore, Veneon Valley->1/0 Fall: Help Terrus extract Vis., Vis->6Co/6Vi WT=3 1207, Year 23: Winter: 2Pe vis from Vancillus.
