Frederic Passes His Gauntlet

1208, Winter

As was habitual, the Covenant gathered in the kitchen, still the largest room underground, early in the winter, to witness Frederic's attempt to pass his gauntlet. The mundane and homey surroundings provided a sharp counterpoint to the powerful magics about to be unleashed.

"This year," rumbled Terrus, "we shall use Rego." Frederic selected Imagonem, to no one's surprise. Terrus nodded, and the ritual began.

The observers saw a phantasm appear between the men, a huge tower of stone. The top suddenly leaned toward Terrus and a piece of rock fell from it striking the elder mage and dissipating. A slight frown crossed Terrus' visage and then the tower leaned the other way sending a small shower of illusory stones down onto Frederic who winced. The tower seemed to hang for a moment then, undecided as the two magi contested, then it suddenly crashed down onto Frederic burying him under rubble which vanished as it stuck.

The certamen was over, Frederic lay unconscious on the floor. Terrus regarded him for a long moment with an unreadable expression, then said, "Summon Juana. He has passed his gauntlet." Without a further word, he turned and began to return to his sanctum.

Leporideas bounded over to the unconscious Frederic and gently shook him. When that failed, he grabbed a mug of water and tossed it over him.

Frederic woke and cursed himself for failing.

"You passed!" exclaimed Leporideas with joy. As the little man helped Frederic up, he continued "Terrus said so, you passed."

"I did, umm, I mean, he did," Frederic exclaimed as he looked around for the abs ent Terrus. "So what now then? Do I get my own lab? I've been wanting one fo r a while now."

Leporideas looked to Osprey, then back to Frederic. "You have to make your own," he said shyly considering his own modest attempt.

"Or ask Terrus to do it for you," said Osprey. "Although you'd then owe him a favor."

"Perhaps I can make him something," Frederic responded.
